The mission of the Center for Cognitive Coaching is to expand the influence of Cognitive CoachingSM by
building capacity in systems. Cognitive CoachingSM is a process that supports individuals and organizations
in becoming self-directed. Its mission is to produce self-directed persons with the cognitive capacity for excellence
both independently and as members of a community. Self-directed people are self-managing, self-monitoring, and
self-modifying. Arthur Costa and Robert Garmston created Cognitive CoachingSM in 1984. Drs. Costa and
Garmston have developed a variety of training opportunities and have authored Cognitive Coaching: A Foundation
for Renaissance Schools to support others in learning the process of Cognitive CoachingSM.
The Center for Cognitive Coaching (CCC) serves as a resource, clearinghouse, and contact point for those wishing
to increase their personal expertise and/or organizational capacity in Cognitive CoachingSM (CC). The
CCC provides training, resources, and consultation for enculturating the principles of Cognitive CoachingSM in
organizations. The Center supports individuals as they enhance their coaching skills and develop their identity
as a mediator of thinking in a variety of contexts.
