Cognitive Coaching SM Trainers

Co-Developers
Arthur Costa and Robert Garmston are the Co-Developers of Cognitive CoachingSM. At the time they created Cognitive CoachingSM in 1984, they were both education professors at California State University at Sacramento. Today they are Professors of Education, Emeriti, retired from the university, but conducting training and traveling all over the world. In addition to the Cognitive CoachingSM work they are doing in Syria, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Singapore, Israel, Mexico and Venezuela, each one is also involved in new endeavors—Art in Habits of Mind and Bob in Adaptive Schools. They are truly self-directed learners who continue to teach and learn from diverse communities of learners.

Co-Directors
Jane Ellison and Carolee Hayes became the Co-Directors of the Center for Cognitive CoachingSM in January 2000. Their backgrounds in public education and extensive experience with Cognitive CoachingSM make them uniquely qualified to continue the leadership begun by Art and Bob. Carolee and Jane live in suburbs of Denver, Colorado.

Training Associates
In addition to Art, Bob, Carolee and Jane, there are 38 Training Associates who conduct the Cognitive Coaching Foundation Seminar® throughout the United States and Canada. Consult this site's map of the United States and Canada to locate a Training Associate near you. (NOTE: The map may take a couple minutes to display. Double-click on the map's yellow "note" icons to display names and addresses.) The names and locations of the Cognitive Coaching Training Associates are also listed below. Biographical information is available for most of the Training Associates:

In-House Trainers
When Training Associates conduct training within a school district, one of their goals is to build capacity within the system. One way this is done is through the development of "in-house" trainers—staff members who receive extensive training with a Training Associate in order to learn to conduct Cognitive CoachingSM training in their own district.

Becoming an Agency Trainer
After taking the Foundation Seminar, if a person wants to provide Cognitive CoachingSM leadership within his/her district, or become an in-house trainer there are multiple opportunities for learning to be extended. See the page entitled "Becoming an Agency Trainer" to learn more about taking a leadership role in Cognitive CoachingSM.
