"To dance with a system is to listen to its beat and then move towards new moves, new rhythms and new patterns."

For Diane Phillips, this is the learning that is called Cognitive CoachingSM. Diane, Assistant Superintendent of a school division in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and her partners, Marilyn Onisko, Middle Years Consultant, and Cognitive Coaching Training Associate, John Dyer, from Calgary, Alberta, issued invitations to divisional and provincial partners to join in the dance and listen to the tune of a different drummer. Subsequently over the years, in a division of 500+ employees, over two thirds of the teaching staff and all of the administrative staff were trained in the Foundation level of Cognitive CoachingSM and many enjoyed the Advanced Training. Diane, Marilyn and John saw increased efficacy throughout the division and the province as people began to take some new steps in an ever-changing culture.

With this CC rhythm as her guide, Diane choreographed her work at the provincial, national and international level as she presented numerous workshops on topics such as: The Adaptive School, Differentiating Instruction, Learning Styles, Multiple Intelligences, Leadership for Literacy, Literacy in the High School, Dimensions of Learning, Authentic Assessment, School Climate, School Planning, and, of course, Cognitive CoachingSM.

One could say that she never really worked "from 9-5," but instead carries the tools, maps and strategies of coaching into "who she is still becoming." Honouring teacher and administrator reflection and collaboration, the dance continues in a swirl of colour and the joy of constant learning.
