 Lynn
Sawyer is Director of Professional Development (a
part of the Human Resources Division) for the Washoe
County School District in Reno, Nevada, a district
of 83 K-12 schools and 3,700 teachers. Lynn oversees
professional development for certified, classified,
and administrative staff during the induction, growth,
and mastery phases of development. As part of her
responsibilities in the Human Resources Division,
she guided a Teacher Evaluation Task Force in developing
a new system for teacher evaluation based on Enhancing
Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching,
(Danielson, 1996, ASCD). Focused on fostering teacher
self-reflection and self-directed growth, the system
was field-tested for two years, and implemented district-wide
in Fall 2000. It is supported with staff development
for teachers and administrators in pedagogical best
practices, Cognitive CoachingSM for mentor
teachers and administrators, and content foundational
to the student academic standards.
Lynn’s experience includes ten years
as a teacher in an alternative high school, where
her emphasis was on higher order thinking skills based
on the work of Art Costa (Habits of Mind). She spent
nine years as a professional development trainer of
teachers, and four years as a curriculum coordinator
for curriculum revisions and text adoptions in core
content areas. She is a Cognitive CoachingSM
Training Associate, a member of the ASCD Faculty (Association
for Supervision and Curriculum Development) in the
areas of Teacher Performance/ Evaluation, Habits of
Mind, and Building Consensus and Collaboration in
Educational Settings. She has also done extensive
training in cooperative learning and best instructional
strategies. An interesting strand has been conducting
long-range goal-setting and consensus workshops for
School Boards in Nevada and California.
Lynn is also the Director of the Northwest
Regional Professional Development Program, established
by the Nevada State Legislature to provide intensive
professional development for teachers and administrators
in three counties in implementing the Nevada Student
Academic Standards.
