Interdependence: Inviting Cognitive Shift

Louise provided feedback that the weekly reminders on inviting cognitive shift in the various States of Mind was especially useful to her and that she would like to see that extended. With that in mind, this week's "Sustaining the Journey" focuses on interdependence.

On Day 6 of the Cognitive Coaching Foundation Seminar®, participants learn strategies for inviting cognitive shift. We define cognitive shift as a significant insight or transformation in thinking. Cognitive shift can increase a person's capacity in any of the five States of Mind.

Interdependence requires a person to think in a way that is larger than oneself. It includes the capacity to see oneself as part of something greater. As a result of that capacity, the person sees the benefits she/he receives from being a part of a larger system. Simultaneously, the person possesses a sense of responsibility to also make contributions to the larger community. It is this commitment to reciprocity that characterizes high interdependence.

One strategy for inviting cognitive shift in this State of Mind is Inviting Collaboration. Some sample questions are:

  • What are some of the contributions you might be able to make to this effort?
  • How might you learn from the work of others?
  • What might be some common goals you share?
  • What might be in it for both of you?

As you work this week, listen for times when a meditative question related to interdependence might serve an individual or group. Practice crafting questions to invite cognitive shift.
