Consciousness: Inviting Cognitive Shift

Consciousness is a gateway into all States of Mind. It is a strong part of being self-directed as it gives us capacity to self-manage, self-monitor, and self-modify. It is critical to becoming reflective as well.

The skillful coach uses cognitive shift strategies to increase consciousness. One is to Invite Metacognition. Here are some sample questions to guide your practice for this week?

  • "What are some of your internal thought processes about _________?"
  • "What are the real issues for you in this situation?"
  • "What are some assumptions do you hold about _________?"
  • "Why is this important to you?" (This is one of the few times a Cognitive CoachSM asks a question with a "why?" It is intended to invite a values search.)
