Self-Directed Persons

During the month of April, a time of spring and rebirth in nature, "Sustaining the Journey" will invite you to reground yourself in some of the fundamental tenets of Cognitive CoachingSM. Through reflection, it is hoped you will reconnect to the roots of this work, be nurtured in your own growth, and commit to a renewed sense of purpose in your coaching work.

The mission of Cognitive CoachingSM includes: "to produce self-directed persons." Costa and Garmston explicate three characteristics of self-directedness: self-managing, self-monitoring, self-modifying in the CC text on page 17.

If you were to describe qualities of people you know in each of these three arenas of self-directedness, what would you say are the descriptors for each?

Self-managing:

Self-monitoring:

Self-modifying:

Take time to think about a project or role in your work. Assess your own self-directedness for each of the three qualities on a scale of 1–5, with 5 being highly self-directed. How would your supervisor assess your level of self-directedness? Evaluate your satisfaction with these ratings.

What are the factors that contribute to your capacity to be self-directed? What mental processes enhance your consciousness about being self-directed? How do you maintain your self-directedness with integrity in a world that is sometimes other-directed?
