Holonomous People

During the month of April, a time of spring and rebirth in nature, "Sustaining the Journey" will invite you to reground yourself in some of the fundamental tenets of Cognitive CoachingSM. Through reflection, it is hoped you will reconnect to the roots of this work, be nurtured in your own growth, and commit to a renewed sense of purpose in your coaching work.

The mission of Cognitive CoachingSM refers to, "the cognitive capacity for high performance both independently and as members of a community." The concept of holonomy refers to the simultaneity of part and whole. Holonomous people live as autonomous individuals while also attending to their connections to a larger whole. Holonomous people:
  1. Extend their vision to perceive the largest possible perspectives of a situation and realize that the "whole" is filled with detail.

  2. Envision the future by anticipating the consequences of their present actions as well as reflecting on their past experiences with those consequences before they act.

  3. Think beyond the immediacy of this moment's goals, desires, and gratifications to understand and care for deeper, long-range needs especially as they relate to achieving their own interests through the pursuit of outcomes that work for all.

  4. Look beyond their personal view, and even beyond the dominant view of a group or culture to hear, understand, and empathize with the views and culture of others.

  5. Encounter each of life's situations with wonder, curiosity, and a sense of adventure, and thus abandon the illusion of persistent certainty and instead become friendly with humility, humor, and change.

  6. Value and draw upon all forms of knowing including intuitive, spiritual, scientific, and thus, according to best purpose, weave them together in their cognitive toolbox, letting none colonize their awareness to the exclusion of the rest.

  7. Recognize that human destiny is bound up with the destiny of all others and that in the vastness of interdependence the effective solutions to the diverse sufferings of the world's people can be revealed; they think beyond their personal world to the world of fellow human beings and all other life.1

How important is it to you to live holonomously? In considering these characteristics, which is most important to you? What are some ways that characteristic manifests itself on daily basis in your life? What new goals might you set for yourself to enhance your holonomy?
