Case Study: Mary Lou, School Counselor
During May, "Sustaining the Journey" will offer you an opportunity to apply your knowledge in assessing States of Mind. A short scenario will be presented and you will be offered some questions to consider as you analyze the situation.
Mary Lou's job as a counselor has changed dramatically since Response To Intervention has been implemented. She is expected to manage student interventions and be a touchstone for all the teachers working with her student caseload. Sometimes Mary Lou feels under-qualified for this new role, because she lacks classroom experience and is uncomfortable holding teachers accountable for implementing agreed upon plans. Mary Lou wishes her principal would be more active in monitoring the process instead of relying on her to do so. Mary Lou has considered retiring early, because she finds she is more and more uncomfortable with the expectations of her job description. When she was hired as a counselor, all of her time was spent on social and emotional issues. Now she is being asked to be responsible for student learning, a complete role shift. The change in identity is very difficult and creates a lot of stress for Mary Lou.
How has change impacted Mary Lou's States of Mind? Which one(s) might be important entry points?
