Case Study: Reynelda, Classroom Teacher
During May, "Sustaining the Journey" will offer you an opportunity to apply your knowledge
in assessing States of Mind. A short scenario will be presented and you will be offered some
questions to consider as you analyze the situation.
Reynelda is in her first year of teaching. She is also the mother of twin boys, 3 years old.
Reynelda's principal has told her that she is not seeing adequate progress on the formative assessments
done regularly by the school. Reynelda is overwhelmed by the demands of teaching and parenting.
She has little time to herself and is uncertain how to be more effective with her students. She
has asked for help from her colleagues and feels like they have given her some good strategies.
In spite of her efforts, many of her students continue to show little progress. Reynelda is discouraged
and wondering if her contract will be renewed for another year. She is fearful that she is inadequate
both as a teacher and as a parent.
What States of Mind are high and low for Reynelda? What are some questions you might ask her? What
support functions might be most helpful to her?
